What Is Polished Concrete?
Customers usually ask for polished concrete floors when stating that they would like a concrete floor that is shiny. However, even though the name clearly states that this process
would produce a polished floor, the fact is that oftentimes that is not the case.
Since polished concrete floors require a very strong concrete base, many times the concrete slab inside your commercial facility simply cannot withstand this process. This leaves customers unsatisfied with the finished product.
When distinguishing between the two, it is important to note that polished concrete achieves its sheen in a completely different way than grind and seal does and that it is more labor-intensive as well.
The process involves polishing the surface of a concrete slab with a machine that is fitted with industrial diamonds. The diamonds polish the floor until it reaches its desired level of shine, and a high gloss performance finish is applied on top.
This process does not work for every concrete surface, and many times the concrete slab does not allow for the proper amount of sheen to be produced. Additionally, this process also takes longer than grind and seal and has a higher failure rate.
What Is Grind And Seal?
Typically, the shiny concrete floors that you see in commercial facilities are actually grind and seal concrete flooring, not polished concrete. Grind and seal floors offer more sheen than polished concrete, and it works on most concrete surfaces as well.
The process of grind and seal involves grinding the concrete substrate with concrete grinders, filling the cracks and divots with patching materials, and sealing the concrete floor with either an epoxy or polyurethane topical coating.
During this process, colors and dyes can also be added to the concrete substrate in order to give the slab a neutral, earthy or more colorful tone.
